The Carnegie Arts Center is pleased to announce the opening of a new exhibition in their Lobby Gallery at 250 N. Broadway in Downtown Turlock.  “Inspiring Women: An Exhibition of Art and Letters” features works created by members of the regional chapter of the National League of American Pen Women. NLAPW is a professional organization for women artists, writers and composers. Founded more than 100 years ago, when women were not as noticed in the literary and artistic professions as today, the NLAPW encourages the work of professional women engaged in all forms of creative expression. The Modesto Branch of the NLAPW was founded in 1936; currently, the Modesto Chapter boasts 35 members from throughout the region.

This exhibition was developed to feature both visual artists and writers in the Modesto-based group. Carnegie Arts Center Director Lisa McDermott explains, “The pairings on display are examples of ekphrasis, the creation of a work of art that responds to another work by expressing its essence in a different form. In most cases, a visual artist partnered with a writer who created poems or prose to interpret or speak to specific works of art. In one instance the pair began with a poem and the artwork was created in response to the written piece.”

Featuring works by 12 artists and 12 writers, the show highlights the relationship between the art forms and the rich possibilities of the creative process.  An illustrated catalogue will accompany the exhibition.
