Central Valley jazz musician Joe Mazzaferro will perform at the Carnegie Arts Center in Turlock this November! Look forward to a magical evening of jazz improvisation as the Joe Mazzaferro Septet performs in the Carnegie Loft. Septet members include Sacramento musician Brenden Lowe, saxophonist Rick Russell, bassist Brian Clarke, drummer Eugene Harris, and CSU Stanislaus Jazz Ensemble members Mark Twoney and Jesus Arriaga.
As the birth of jazz music in New Orleans in the late 19th century coincided with the origination of surrealist art styles in Europe, surrealism and jazz share quite a few commonalities. Drawing inspiration from childhood, deviating from traditional convention and reason, and having a nature of spontaneity and dream-like effect are just some of the qualities that interweave the two artistic styles. The same way surrealism reflects an imaginative reality, jazz improvisation allows musicians to take a song and reinvent it, creating their own reality for the music.
Northern California-based trumpeter, educator, composer, and arranger Joe Mazzaferro explains jazz improvisation as “a language,” a continuous process of communication between musicians that includes a call and response progression similar to talking. The improvisation component allows Joe and the Septet to reflect on their past experiences to reinterpret a song and put their own twist on it. They try to put themselves into a song and draw from the excitement and energy they feel on stage for inspiration as they play.
Joe Mazzaferro holds a Bachelor’s in Music Education from the University of the Pacific and a Master’s of Music in Jazz from the University of Tennessee. His many years as a music educator have afforded him an immense wealth of knowledge in jazz education. In 2012, Joe became the Coordinator of Jazz Studies at California State University, Stanislaus, where he teaches various jazz courses and directs the CSU Stanislaus Jazz Ensemble. Joe also currently serves as the Musical Director and Co-Founder of the Sacramento Jazz Orchestra and teaches regularly at Cazadero Music Camp.
