The California State University Stanislaus Jazz Ensemble will perform songs from Duke Ellington’s album “The Nutcracker Suite” in a live jazz concert at the Carnegie Arts Center this December. Inspired by the holiday favorite, Duke Ellington’s compositions feature jazz interpretations of music from “The Nutcracker” ballet by Tchaikovsky. Director Joe Mazzaferro chose this piece because he wanted to perform something that had some holiday spirit as well as musical value. To Mazzaferro, Duke Ellington is the most important composer of the 20th century, and he has been eager to share some of Ellington’s work. As the original Nutcracker is one of the most iconic musical traditions for the holidays,  Mazzaferro is excited to present Ellington’s unique interpretation of this classic.

The CSU Stanislaus Jazz Ensemble is excited to share with the community what they have been working on this semester. The Ensemble actively performs a wide variety of musical styles from the cutting edge contemporary styles of artists such as Maria Schneider and Jim McNeely, to the classics of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and Charles Mingus. The Jazz Ensemble regularly performs on campus and at local jazz clubs, as well as many local and regional jazz festivals. Don’t miss out on this jazz rendition of a holiday classic performed by Turlock’s own CSU Stanislaus Jazz Ensemble. To learn more about them, visit http://bit.ly/1xwkKhE.
