Entries are now being accepted for the third annual Central California Art Showcase exhibition taking place this spring at the Carnegie Arts Center in Turlock and the Mistlin Gallery in Modesto. The juried exhibition is a unique collaboration between the region’s two premier visual arts galleries celebrating regional artistic excellence. For this show both galleries will be exhibiting works selected by a single panel of judges. Entries of works in all media are being accepted now through February 21, 2016, and the show will be on display at both galleries from April 1 through May 27, 2016.
“By sharing this exhibition between our two venues, we attract more visitors to our two galleries in Downtown Modesto and Downtown Turlock”, says Marianne Ward, chair of the Mistlin Gallery’s exhibition committee. “Visitors to both galleries will be rewarded with art of the highest quality, and may be exposed to artists they might not have known about before.”
“We think this creates an exciting opportunity for all Central California artists,” adds Carnegie Director Lisa McDermott. “The main goal of this collaboration is to highlight the importance of the arts across our entire region.”
Works in all media will be accepted and artists may enter up to eight works. Entry fee is $20 per work. Members of either the Carnegie Arts Center or the Central California Art Association will receive a discount on their entry fee. Upon acceptance by the judges, artists will be notified of the display location of their accepted work(s). A total of $3,500 in prize money will be awarded. All entry materials (entry forms, images, and fees) must be received by 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 21, 2016. Entries should be submitted through SmarterEntry.com; a link to the exhibit submissions page is available on either gallery’s website. All materials and payment will be handled on line. The judges for the 2016 Showcase will be Gerald Boyd, painter & pastel artist; Cara Weston, photographer; and William F. Wilson, Cultural Arts Manager of the Grand Theatre Center for the Arts in Tracy.
ABOUT THE JURORS
Gerald Boyd is a representational artist who works in a variety of media including oil, pastel and watercolor. Raised in Southern California, Gerald apprenticed as a commercial sign painter while studying with prominent West Coast artist and teacher, Theodore Lukits (1897-1992). In 1969, after becoming a journeyman in his trade, Gerald worked as a commercial artist, spending 30 years living in Fremont. In 2002 Gerald and his wife Sandra moved to Galt where he has built a new studio, retired, and is devoting more of his time to painting.
Gerald served two terms as President of the Fremont Art Association and twice won “Artist of the Year” honors. He taught classes and portrait workshops in Fremont and nearby communities. He has served as juror for the Society of Western Artists 51st and 57th Annual Shows, the Motherlode International Art Exhibition in Placerville, the Sierra Pastel Society, and numerous others. A juried Signature Member of The Pastel Society of America, he has also been honored with Signature Membership in the Society of Western Artists and has earned the “Distinguished Pastellist” designation with the Pastel Society of the West Coast. More recently he has taken part in exhibits at the National Arts Club in New York City and the International Association of Pastel Societies in Albuquerque, NM, and Boston, MA. Cara Weston is a fine art photographer living and working in the Big Sur area of California. She is the daughter of renowned photographer Cole Weston and actress Helen Prosser-Weston, niece of Brett Weston and granddaughter of Edward Weston – recognized as the leading visionary in modern photography. Having worked with her father Cole and Uncle Brett, as well as Rod Dresser, photographer and assistant to Ansel Adams, Cara has followed the path of her heritage. The body of work she has created over the past two decades respects the craftsmanship tradition of the medium and reflects a unique voice within her family. It now stands alongside that of her famous family members as a prime example of fine art image making in the 21st century.
In addition to her work as a photographer, Cara is the former director of the internationally renowned Weston Gallery in Carmel. As director she curated shows that included exhibitions for luminaries such as Yousuf Karsh, Ansel Adams, Michael Kenna and of course Edward, Cole and Brett Weston. In addition to the gallery exhibitions she has produced, Cara has also curated several art shows in Los Angeles and New York that have featured the best works of today’s art photographers. William F. Wilson II is a celebrated interdisciplinary artist, arts administrator, curator and educator with 25 years of professional experience. After several years in Ohio, Mr. Wilson relocated to northern California in 2001 to re-design the Exhibitions Program at San Joaquin Delta College, as the first Director of Delta Center for the Arts’ Horton Gallery. In 2006 he joined the Cultural Arts Division in the City of Tracy, currently serving as Cultural Arts Manager and Civic Art Program Manager at the Grand Theatre Center for the Arts. Across his career William has worked in local, regional, national and international project capacities developing, designing and presenting hundreds of exhibitions and events, while collaborating with thousands of visual and performing artists in diverse communities, venues and institutions. William is also active in the rhinoceros conservation community and is married to critically acclaimed artist/educator, Ilena Finocchi.
ABOUT THE CARNEGIE ARTS CENTER
The historic Carnegie Library opened in 1916, and is now one of only a handful of art centers in the region. The Carnegie’s programs include exhibitions, education classes and programs, lectures, and activities in artistic genres as diverse as dance, music, theater and more. At least 25% of all programming is dedicated to children and teens. The Carnegie Arts Center Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization and all donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.

ABOUT THE MISTLIN GALLERY
The Central California Art Association (CCAA) was established in 1952 and started by a small group of artists committed to supporting the arts in our community. The Mistlin Gallery is run by volunteer members of the CCAA, who endeavor to promote and provide art education and cultural opportunities for all residents of Modesto and the surrounding region. The 501(c) 3 non-profit organization has a cooperative and growing membership of over 250 members.
The Mistlin Gallery is located at 1015 J Street, Downtown Modesto.
The Mistlin Gallery is open to the public from11:30-5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday; noon-4 p.m. on Saturday .
