The Carnegie will welcome students from all parts of Stanislaus, Merced and San Joaquin counties to view the fall exhibition Childhood Classics: 100 Years of Original Illustration from the Art Kandy Collection.

Each visit includes a tour of the exhibition as well as a hands-on activity that will complement the students’ gallery experience ($1 per student materials fee will apply). In the gallery we will learn about some of the different illustrators’ careers and discuss the role of pictures in telling an author’s story. The studio art lesson will focus on the basic elements of composition for creating illustrations. Using a random sentence generator, students will be asked to create an illustration for a story containing that sentence. Discussion will follow about how to enhance the written word through the use of color, shape and balance.
Children’s books have always had a dual role. First, they are created to educate and entertain young readers – to start them off on a lifetime of reading enrichment and enjoyment. Second, they are historical touchstones, reflecting and visualizing the history and the values of the era in which they are written. This exhibition presents the illustrations and the illustrators that have been bringing stories to life for generations of children. From the first “Little Golden Books” of the 1940s to the most popular artists of this generation (such as Mo Willems and David Shannon), the show’s content will be particularly relevant to students since many will already be familiar with these stories.

Carnegie donors have generously established a School Bus Fund, so any school may apply for assistance with the cost of transportation. We can fund up to $200 per bus for schools within 20 miles of the Carnegie; $250 per bus for schools traveling farther.
